Choosing the Right Men’s Dress Shirt
A men’s dress shirt should suit the occasion, the tailoring worn with it and the level of formality required. White and light blue are the most versatile choices, working naturally with navy, gray, brown and black suits. Stripes and restrained patterns provide more variety while remaining suitable for business and formal clothing.
The fabric weave affects the shirt’s texture, weight and appearance. Poplin has a smooth and lightweight surface that works particularly well in warm weather and formal settings. Twill has a subtle diagonal texture, drapes well and generally shows fewer creases. Oxford offers more visible texture while remaining polished enough for business suits and tailored outfits.
Collar choice should relate to the jacket, tie and proportions of the wearer. Spread and cutaway collars work well with most suit lapels and provide enough room for a tie knot. A button-down collar has a more relaxed character and is usually better suited to business-casual clothing than highly formal outfits.
Barrel cuffs are the most versatile choice for everyday business wear. French cuffs require cufflinks and create a more formal appearance, making them suitable for weddings, evening events and traditional business dress.
The shirt should sit cleanly across the shoulders and chest without pulling around the buttons. The sleeves should finish near the wrist bone, allowing a small amount of cuff to remain visible beneath the jacket sleeve. A slim or fitted shirt should follow the body without restricting movement when sitting or reaching.
