Eton: Swedish Shirtmaking Since 1928

Eton is a Swedish shirtmaker whose history began in 1928 in Gånghester, a small village near Borås in Sweden’s traditional textile region. The business started as a small sewing workshop established by Annie Pettersson and Febe Lidar and gradually developed into a company increasingly focused on men’s shirts.

During the following decades, shirtmaking became the foundation of the business. By the 1940s, the company had chosen to concentrate on men’s shirts, developing its expertise in fabrics, collars, construction and fit.

The Eton name emerged following a visit to England by the founders’ sons, Rune and Arne Davidson, in 1948. Inspired by the trip, the company introduced the Eton Shirt and formally adopted Eton as its name in 1950. International expansion followed, helping establish the Swedish shirtmaker beyond its domestic market.

Fabric development and innovation have played an important role in Eton’s identity. The brand has continually worked with different cotton weaves, finishes and constructions to create shirts suited to both formal and more relaxed wardrobes.

One of the best-known developments in the brand’s history is Signature Twill, introduced in 1990. This smooth, refined twill became closely associated with Eton’s dress shirts and remains an important part of the collection. The company continued experimenting with fabric finishing and introduced wrinkle-resistant cotton shirts during the following years.

Attention to collars is another characteristic of Eton shirtmaking. Different collar shapes are designed to create a balanced appearance whether the shirt is worn with a tie, beneath tailoring or with an open collar. Cuffs, buttons, stitching and fabric selection also contribute to the character of each design.

Although shirts remain at the heart of Eton, the brand has expanded into a broader men’s wardrobe while maintaining the same focus on fabric, construction and understated design.
