Eton: Swedish Shirtmaking Since 1928
Eton is a Swedish menswear brand with a history centered on the development and refinement of the men’s shirt. The company began in 1928 when Annie Pettersson and Febe Lidar opened a small sewing workshop in Gånghester, near Borås in Sweden’s traditional textile region.
Annie and her husband David Pettersson later took over the business, which increasingly specialized in men’s shirts during the 1930s. By 1946, the company had decided to focus entirely on shirtmaking, initially concentrating on poplin shirts.
The Eton name originated after the founders’ sons, Rune and Arne Davidson, visited England in 1948. Their journey inspired the introduction of the Eton Shirt, and the company formally adopted Eton as its name in 1950. International expansion followed, beginning with retailers in London before extending to other European markets.
Innovation has remained an important part of Eton’s development. The brand introduced its Signature Twill dress shirt in 1990 and launched the Eton Etastar in 1992, which the company describes as the first wrinkle-resistant cotton shirt. The finishing process was created to help the fabric retain its smooth appearance, luster and durability throughout the day.
Eton shirts are made in a range of fabrics and constructions suited to different occasions. Signature twill provides a smooth surface and dependable wrinkle resistance, while poplin has a lighter and cleaner appearance. Oxford weaves add more texture, denim creates a relaxed alternative, and stretch fabrics provide additional flexibility for travel and long working days.
