Choosing the Right Men’s Jeans
The right pair of jeans depends on the fit, rise, denim weight and wash. Darker and cleaner jeans are easier to combine with shirts, knitwear and smarter footwear, while lighter and more visibly washed denim creates a more relaxed appearance.
Slim-fit jeans follow the shape of the leg without fitting as closely as skinny jeans. They work well with T-shirts, polos, shirts and fine knitwear and can also be worn with an unstructured blazer. The jeans should sit cleanly through the thigh and taper toward the ankle without pulling around the seat or knee.
Straight-fit jeans provide more room through the thigh and maintain a more consistent width down the leg. They create a classic silhouette and work particularly well with heavier knitwear, casual jackets, boots and substantial leather shoes. A higher rise can also help the jeans sit more naturally with tucked shirts and shorter jackets.
Denim weight affects how the jeans feel and drape. Lightweight denim around 9.5 or 10 oz. is comfortable in warmer weather and usually feels softer from the beginning. Denim between 11 and 13 oz. provides more structure and is suitable across much of the year. Selvedge denim has a clean finished edge and is often chosen for its traditional construction and ability to develop character through wear.
Dark blue and navy jeans are the most versatile options for polished casual outfits. Mid-blue and light blue washes have a more relaxed character and work naturally during spring and summer. Distressed finishes should generally be combined with simple casual pieces, while cleaner washes can be worn with shirts, merino wool sweaters, loafers and refined sneakers.
Jeans should fit securely around the waist without requiring a belt to hold them in place. The fabric should remain comfortable when sitting, and there should be enough room through the thigh for natural movement. The length can be worn with a slight break or shortened for a cleaner finish, depending on the shoes and preferred silhouette.
