Carlos Santos: Portuguese Shoemaking and Hand-Painted Patina
Carlos Santos is a Portuguese shoemaker based in São João da Madeira, one of Portugal’s established centers of footwear production. The story of the brand is closely connected with Zarco, the shoe factory where Carlos Santos began working at the age of 14. He started in the office before spending more time on the factory floor, learning how shoes were made and later moving into sales and management.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Carlos Santos travelled internationally to study footwear manufacturers, production methods and developments in shoe design. Over time he became the leading figure at Zarco and eventually developed the company’s footwear under his own name, building the Carlos Santos brand around Portuguese production and traditional shoemaking.
Production continues in São João da Madeira, where experienced craftspeople and specialist machinery are used throughout the shoemaking process. Many of the brand’s classic shoes and boots use Goodyear welt construction, in which the upper and sole are joined through a separate welt. This traditional method creates a durable structure and allows properly maintained footwear to be resoled after extended wear. Carlos Santos also uses other construction methods depending on the design and intended character of the shoe.
Hand-painted patina is one of the most recognizable characteristics of Carlos Santos footwear. Layers of pigment, leather dye and finishing products are applied to create tonal variation and depth rather than a completely uniform color. Finishes such as Coimbra, Braga, Wine Shadow, Norte, Bosco and Noir Shadow give traditional shoe designs a more individual appearance.
