Carlos Santos is a family-run Portuguese shoemaker based in São João da Madeira, a city with a long tradition of footwear production. Carlos Santos entered the shoe industry at the age of 14, working for the family-owned Zarco factory before moving from office work into sales, management and the practical study of shoemaking.
During the 1970s and 1980s, he traveled internationally to study established footwear manufacturers, attend trade shows and examine how high-quality shoes were constructed. He later became the owner of Zarco and gradually developed the Carlos Santos brand around Portuguese production, traditional craftsmanship and a distinctive approach to design and finishing.
Carlos Santos shoes are handcrafted by experienced artisans and technicians. Depending on the model and construction, a pair can pass through more than 200 manual operations, with specialized machinery used to support rather than replace skilled handwork.
Many of the brand’s classic shoes and boots use Goodyear welt construction. This method connects the upper and sole through a separate welt, creating durable footwear that can be resoled after extended wear. Carlos Santos also uses other construction systems, including Blake, Bologna and Goodyear Flex, depending on the shape and intended character of the shoe.
Hand-painted patina is one of the brand’s most recognizable features. Multiple layers of pigments, oils and leather dyes are applied to create depth and variation rather than a completely uniform surface. Signature colors such as Coimbra, Braga, Wine Shadow, Norte, Bosco and Noir Shadow give familiar Oxford, derby, loafer and boot designs a more individual appearance.
