Choosing the Right Men’s Shirt

The right shirt depends on the occasion, the clothing worn with it and the level of formality required. Dress shirts are designed primarily for suits, tailored trousers and formal outfits, while casual shirts work more naturally with jeans, chinos, knitwear and relaxed jackets.

White and light blue shirts are the most versatile starting choices. They work with most suit and jacket colors and can be worn across business, wedding and evening settings. Pink, navy and other colors provide more variety, while stripes, checks and smaller patterns work best when the surrounding tailoring is relatively restrained.

The weave affects both appearance and feel. Poplin has a smooth, lightweight surface that suits formal and warm-weather outfits. Twill has a subtle diagonal texture, drapes well and is generally less prone to visible creasing. Oxford and Royal Oxford fabrics offer more texture while remaining suitable for business and smart-casual clothing. Linen is a practical option in warm weather, while denim and stretch fabrics are better suited to relaxed or travel-focused outfits.

Collar and cuff details should also match the intended outfit. Spread and cutaway collars work well with tailoring and can accommodate a tie, while button-down collars have a more relaxed character. Barrel cuffs are the most versatile option, while French cuffs are intended for cufflinks and more formal occasions.

A shirt should sit cleanly across the shoulders and chest without pulling around the buttons. The sleeves should finish around the wrist bone, allowing a small amount of cuff to remain visible beneath a jacket. Slim and fitted shirts create a closer silhouette, but they should still allow comfortable movement when sitting or reaching.
