Choosing the Right Men’s Casual Shirt
A casual shirt is less formal than a traditional dress shirt but can still look polished enough for restaurants, travel, weekends and smart-casual outfits. It works naturally with jeans, chinos, knitwear and relaxed jackets, depending on its fabric, collar and pattern.
Linen shirts are particularly useful in warm weather because the fabric is lightweight and breathable. They pair well with chinos, tailored shorts and lightweight trousers. Natural creasing is part of linen’s relaxed character, so it does not need to appear as crisp as a business shirt.
Denim shirts add more texture and work best in casual outfits. They can be worn with chinos, cords or jeans in a clearly different shade. A dark denim shirt usually looks more polished, while lighter washes create a more relaxed appearance.
Oxford shirts sit between dress and casual clothing. Their textured fabrics work well with jeans and chinos but can also be worn beneath knitwear or an unstructured blazer. Button-down collars reinforce the casual character, while spread collars create a slightly cleaner appearance.
Plain white and light blue shirts are the easiest to combine. Stripes, checks and larger patterns add more character and are usually best paired with simple trousers and knitwear. When wearing a patterned shirt, keeping the remaining colors restrained prevents the outfit from becoming overly busy.
The shirt should fit cleanly across the chest without pulling at the buttons. Casual shirts may be worn tucked or untucked, but an untucked shirt should be short enough to finish around the middle of the trouser fly rather than extending like a dress shirt.
