Choosing the Right Men’s Cardigan
A men’s cardigan provides an adaptable layer that can be worn over a shirt, polo or T-shirt and beneath a coat or jacket. The most suitable style depends on the fastening, neckline, fabric and level of formality required.
A button-fastened V-neck cardigan works particularly well with shirts because it leaves the collar and tie visible. Fine-gauge versions can be combined with tailored trousers for business-casual outfits, while heavier designs pair naturally with chinos and jeans. Wearing the cardigan partly or fully buttoned creates a cleaner appearance than leaving it completely open.
Zip cardigans have a more modern and relaxed character. Mock-neck and crew-neck versions provide additional warmth around the neck and work well over shirts, polos and lightweight knitwear. Fine merino wool zip cardigans can also be worn beneath a coat without adding unnecessary bulk.
Shawl-collar cardigans are usually heavier and more casual. The wider collar and textured knit make them well suited to autumn and winter outfits with jeans, cords and boots. Cable-knit construction adds further texture, so the rest of the outfit is usually best kept relatively simple.
Merino wool is soft, breathable and suitable for fine cardigans that can be worn across several seasons. Cashmere adds softness and warmth without excessive weight, while wool and silk blends can provide a smoother surface and lighter feel. Neutral colors such as navy, gray, beige and brown are easy to combine, while green and rust introduce more character.
A cardigan should fit comfortably across the shoulders and chest without pulling around the buttons or zip. The hem should finish around the waistband, and the sleeves should reach the wrist. Fine cardigans generally look best with a closer fit, while heavier cable-knit and shawl-collar designs can allow slightly more room.
